Ecuador
With 13 million inhabitants, Ecuador is one of the smallest and poorest countries in Latin America. According to the Ecuadorian government, in 1998 62.6% of the population lived below Ecuador's official poverty line. Within this context, Ecuador is facing health and social issues that have a negative impact in its development.
The Public Health Ministry of Ecuador reported that in 2006 there were 1,293 HIV identified cases and 100 AIDS cases. The larger population infected are adolescents ages 16-20. In addition, domestic violence is a problem clearly recognized by the government. A survey lead by the Studies and Planification Center (SEPLAES) in Quito, reported 60% of women are or haven been beaten by her husband or partner.
