The "My Community" Initiative

My Community builds on PCI-Media Impact's relationship with partners and partner organizations throughout Mexico and Central and South America. The initiative helps us develop new relationships in the region and helps PCI-Media Impact create a formal network of mutually supportive grass-roots organizations advocating for greater rights and better health through the use of communications.

My Community is designed to produce new social change communications strategies using radio and entertainment education through training, seed grants and technical assistance. PCI-Media Impact teaches local coalitions, including combinations of NGOs, service providers, radio broadcasters and local government ministries, how to use radio to support various issue-based campaigns and programs that target their communities.

Watch for information announcing the Summer 2007 Training Workshops in preparation for the 2008-09 Roster. For information on previous trainings click here for English and her for Spanish.

The Program Design

Coalitions begin the program by participanting in one of several Entertainment Education and Social Marketing trainings. Participants actively engage in all aspects and stages of production, including the creation of a locally oriented values-grid; scriptwriting exercises and the development of four demonstration scripts; acting, directing and recording two of the shows; and post-production activities. Using PCI-Media Impact's proven social change approach, thraining participants design radio-based communications programs for their communities in order to achide their preset goals in furthering their target issue.

After completing the training, participants are eligible to enter a competitive application process for seed grants to produce their own shows. Our seed grant receipients have come from all over Latin America, including Guatemala, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Peru, while most have created programming to address sexual and reproductive health rights, including women's empowerment and adolescent education, some have worked on environmental issues and the access to health care for migrants.

Finally, the coalitions begin producing and broadcasting their own original programming. Shows typically include a serial drama, a call-in segment and discussions with local experts. The average show's duration can be between 30 and 90 minutes and the length of the season is between 24 and 50 weeks.

The Results

The impact results from the 2005-2006 roster of projects showed some impressive results. Below are three case studies on the impact these radio programs have had on their local communities.

Case Study 1: Guatemala – K’iche Youth Association (Asociación Juventud K’iche)

Case Study 2: Guatemala – Tan Ux’il Association (Asociación Tan Ux’il)

Case Study 3: Honduras – Honduran Association for Family Planning (Asociación Hondureña de Planificación de Familia)
