Peru
Peru has more than 28 million people, with more than 8 million living in the or around the capital of Lima. According to International Planned Parenthood's local affiliate INPPARES, almost half of the people with HIV in the country were infected before they turned 25. A survey in metropolitan Lima found that 30% of students did not know of any sexually transmitted infection (STI); more than 20% did not know that condoms can help prevent these infections; 40% did not know how HIV is transmitted; and among those sexually active, only 21% were using condoms. A survey in a Peruvian secondary school found that 23 percent of young men had a sexually transmitted infection (STI)
